Design reflections

When coming up for designs, we all agreed that we wanted the characters to be blue and purple, and since I took the role of focusing on set design (and set construction), I thought about choosing a colour palette of yellows and browns for the set, in order to contrast with the characters - in this way, the characters won't blend into the background when filming. We ended up leaning more towards the 1950's style kitchen, as the relationship dynamic between the husband and wife we were exploring fit with stories of that era (for example, 'Lamb to the Slaughter' by Roald Dahl), but still wanted to include some hints of the Victorian style in the ideas of wooden furniture and paintings; this colour palette could also bring out this 1950's aesthetic. I also experimented with the idea of hints of blue to tie the characters and the set together. To begin designing the set, I first created a floor plan to get an idea of where the characters could come from and how we could film the shots, making sure to consider which wall(s) we wouldn't have so the camera would not be blocked. From there, I made small samples of ideas for the walls and then sketched some ideas for how different sides/ details could look. My vision for the set was to make a deteriorating house with peeling wallpaper, broken tiles and mouldy corners to reflect the relationship the two characters have.

When bringing my designs to my partner's design for set design, we found that our floor plans were similar, so we took elements from both our ideas and finalised a design and began figuring out the general measurements of the room, then moving onto the smaller details. We also ended up sticking with the colour theme I offered, as we shared the same vision.

I also made some quick sketches for character design too, as everyone in the group was creating their own ideas and then bringing them altogether to choose a final design. When we did bring them altogether, we found that all our designs were quite similar, and the character design team could design final characters easier.
